Kindergarten Registration Q&A for 2021-22
  1. When does Kindergarten pre-registration open?
Kindergarten pre-registration for the 2021-22 school year begins on Monday, February 8, at 9:00 a.m.
  1. How do I pre-register my child for Kindergarten?
To pre-register your child for Kindergarten, you must go to https://yukon.ca/en/register-child-school#register-your-child-for-kindergarten on Monday, February 8, at 9:00 a.m. and fill out the pre-registration form.
  1. Will there be a lottery for French Immersion this year like in past years?
We have allocated space for 54 students at Whitehorse Elementary and 18 students at Selkirk Elementary. These allocations are based on numbers we have received in the previous year.
There will only be a lottery for French Immersion programs this year if Selkirk Elementary or Whitehorse Elementary fill up.
If one school fills up, we will conduct a lottery for that school’s program and any student who does not get into that school will have the opportunity to get into the other school’s program.
We do our best to accommodate all students who register for French Immersion through our programs at Selkirk Elementary and Whitehorse Elementary.
  1. Should I sign up for my attendance area school and a French Immersion program in case I don’t get into French Immersion?
No. Parents should only fill out the form once per child. You should sign up for your preferred program. So if you are planning on signing up for French Immersion, please select this option on the form.
We work very hard to try to accommodate all students in French Immersion between Selkirk and Whitehorse Elementary.
If your child does not get into the program, then we work with you to discuss options. Additional space opens in Grade 1, and students who have not been placed in French Immersion in Kindergarten can integrate into the program in Grade 1.
  1. When / how do I find out what school my child has been assigned to?
Once we have reviewed and approved the pre-registration forms, we will contact you to inform you which school your child has been assigned to.
Once your child has been assigned to a school, the school will ask you to show a birth certificate or other proof of age for your child, and you will fill out some additional forms.
  1. I can’t fill out Kindergarten pre-registration form; when can I fill it out?
The Kindergarten pre-registration form will be available to fill out and submit on Monday, February 8, at 9:00 a.m. It is available now for viewing.
  1. Do all schools use the online pre-registration?
No. Rural schools and École Émilie-Tremblay work directly with parents to register students.
  1. Are parents required to use computers to sign up?
Yes. Parents who need help can call the Department of Education at 867 667-5931.
  1. What is pre-registration? Will I still have to register my child with the school?
After students are pre-registered with the online form, they will be assigned to a school.
Once parents receive a notice of which school their child has been assigned to, they then need to complete the registration process with that school.
  1. What is meant by ‘regular program offered in my attendance area school’?

The regular program offered in my attendance area school refers to the standard English language program offered at the school in your attendance area.

Students who are enrolling in a regular English language Kindergarten program are required to attend the school in their attendance area.

Attendance areas, sometimes, called catchment zones, are used to assign students to schools nearby to where they live.

  1. What about French Immersion programs? Do we have to go to the school closest to where we live?

French Immersion is a special program that is offered at Selkirk Elementary and École Whitehorse Elementary and students from all over Whitehorse are able to register for either school.
